Independent, yes! But connected with everyone

Some people ask us: what does it mean that you are an “independent fair”?

The answer can be seen in the great reception we have from our winemakers. First of all, when we organize Vella Terra Barcelona we do not do it under the catalog of any distributor or in favor of any particular association, we support all equally and we invite them to participate freely if they want and many of them actively participate. creating interesting synergies between them, since we directly call the farmer-grower without any intermediaries.

Vella Terra Barcelona 2019

At Vella Terra Barcelona we invite and involve winemakers who have no distribution in the city and those who already have it in order to stimulate the responsible consumption of their wines, providing a quality exhibition space and up to all of them. That’s why we dedicate every cent of our funds to organize a quality fair, with an accessible website, with an informative and collaborative non-profit blog. In addition, all our wine growers have a tab on our website and we have an effective and dynamic communication. We make the fair in a central and comfortable location in our city, taking care of every detail and taking care of our winegrowers so that they only have to come and visit us, explain his product and attend to his visitors, our fair is multitudinous, with people from our city but from all over the world, but also in a place where you can do a comfortably taste and where most professionals with experience in this type of fairs are happy to attend.

Vella Terra Barcelona 2019

We want to demonstrate that the excellence of the product that we exhibit is on the same mood with all the independent and international fairs of the world.

Every year and since our first edition, we contacted and collaborated with different schools and non-profit associations, creating synergies and connecting them with companies in the sector.

Vella Terra Barcelona was established 3 years ago as an independent fair and was born from the need to show and promote the products of natural agricultura: to promote contact between different groups in the sector, such as artisans, the great personalities of the world of the hostelry and companies dedicated to distributing wine, not only locally, also worldwide.

What we say is what we do, and we like to tell the truth: our selection is characterized by being transparent, it is not our policy to put names that will not attend and if there is any artisan Will not to come we let you know in advance. We believe that transparency and the community we are building should be based on good patterns of coexistence with all wine sectors and even with ours, otherwise it would be a chaos.

The Vella Terra fair stands as a necessary networking to boost the artisan wine and the culture of the demarcation: it has wine growers from Alt Penedès, Anoia, Bages, Baix Llobregat, Garraf, Maresme, Osona, Conca de Barbera, Pinell de Brai and of all the Catalan geography, as well as other regions of the rest of Spain, such as Balearic Islands, La Rioja, Andalusia, Valencian Community, Murcia, Castilla León, Castilla la Mancha or Galicia, we also have the presence of pioneering wineries and internationally recognized from France, Italy, Portugal or Austria that practice organic, natural and biodynamic agriculture.

We connect our region with other European winemakers who make wines without any intervention, both in the field and in the winery: handcrafted or extremely organic wines, becoming some of the healthiest wines on the market, we also promote other products from natural agriculture and sustainable such as craft beers, sakes, distillates, biodynamic extra virgin olive oils, artisan breads of sourdough and specialty coffees, with special emphasis on the work of local artisans and supporting their work and their high quality products.

Healthy wines, without pesticides in the fields and without additives in the cellar.

The wines of the winegrowers at the Vella Terra Barcelona fair are made without filtering, without clarifying, without stabilizing and without adding any type of chemical (before, during or after all the processes), with minimal human intervention in them, that is, tilling as little as possible, picking grapes by hand etc.

At the Vella Terra Barcelona fair, we keep the distance from controversy, and we respect all opinions, without giving them much importance. Because if these are not duly supported by verified scientific studies, under years of research, they are still just only opinions, typical of a free speech society, and come from doctors, scientists, winemakers, sommeliers or anyone with desire to think

Vella Terra Barcelona 2019

The wine itself is a food that should be consumed in moderation, but the difference between taste and health of wines with traces of chemicals and wines without traces of chemicals is remarkable.

For example, at the Vella Terra Barcelona fair, these parameters are strictly complied:

  • Grapes from organic farming, biodynamic or permaculture and harvested by hand.
  • The alcoholic fermentation must be carried out without added commercial yeasts and malolactic fermentation without adding bacteria.
  • Sugar levels, acidity, color or alcohol levels should never be corrected.
  • In no case should be clarified or filtered aggressively, or not filtered in any case.
  • It is not stabilized neither using chemical substances, nor with industrial oenological techniques.
  • We do not allow micro-oxygenation or any other process that accelerates or simulates the natural processes of processing.
  • They should not contain added sulfites. Of 110 producers that we currently have, we only leave 3% considered “Low Intervention”, which depending a lot on the producer, area of production and type of vinification has a level of sulphitation below 30 ml.

Professionals behind a project.

The selection of wineries present at the Vella Terra fair is responsibility of the sommelier specialized in natural wines Stefano Fraternali, responsible for the independent selection of wineries, for which he travels all over the world for more than 8 years to get to know the artisans and taste their wines in situ.

The work of communication, advertising, content creation and design are the responsibility of Alejandra Delfino, creative director, producer and expert in digital communication. Lover of natural agriculture and bio culture.

In just four years Vella Terra Barcelona has managed to visualize and positioned the offer of wines from our country in the international arena.

Dozens of winemakers from neighboring countries travel every year to attend this massive fair, with a long waiting list, as it is rated as one of the best independent natural wine fairs in Europe and as the largest platform for the internationalization of wine biodynamic and natural Spanish.

Vella Terra 2019: numbers

Vella Terra Barcelona 2019 brought together more than 100 exhibitors who gathered in Barcelona between February 10th and 11th.

The tables of the independent fair of the natural wine fair, were completely reserved for months ago, as always, the preference was given to the artisans of the natural wine of the region and the country.

In total, almost 200 wine professionals came from abroad. These professionals are distributors of more than 10 countries that stayed in different hotels in the city, in total they went through the Estació del Nord 1500 visitors, coming from all the Spanish geography and from all over the world, for it is estimated that the numbers of benefit that left the realization of the fair in the city of Barcelona were around 100,000 euros in just one weekend. In addition to the immediate benefits, contracts and thousands of euros will be generated between buyers and producers during the year.

Vella Terra Barcelona 2019

We counted around 400 different wine references and opened more than 1500 bottles of natural wine.

The used glass of the fair was recycled for reuse by the Barcelona City Council and the Re Zero association for the reuse of the bottles with which we have an agreement to participate as a sector fair in the city.

Vella Terra Barcelona has a lot to do with education about wine from sustainable farming and artisanal winemaking, as well as with the diffusion and insertion of the producer-exhibitor in the market. The fair sees itself as an ideal platform to make small independent natural wine producers known and to connect the latter with countless people.

Vella Terra Barcelona also has a network of restaurants that market these sustainable products and organize different events throughout the year:

Vella Terra Barcelona 2019

The 4th edition of the International Natural Wine Fair of Barcelona has been a great success.

We deeply appreciate the artisans who place their trust in us every year, wine professionals, collaborators, all our “Crew” and all the public that accompanied us on February 11th at the Estació del Nord in Barcelona.

We are already working on the 2020 edition of Vella Terra: it will be our fifth edition and we will prepare something very special to celebrate the relationship between Barcelona and the natural movement.
