OUR HISTORY

Our fair began to take shape in late 2014. At that time, the number of winemakers producing natural wine in Spain was small, there were few entrepreneurs betting on its distribution, and thus, limited options to enjoy and learn about the sector. Vella Terra emerged from the need to create an independent and international space for industry professionals and end consumers, where natural wineries already existing in our territory and those producing them for decades in other countries could express the movement, share, and exhibit their wines.

After years of traveling and visiting natural wineries in Spain and Europe, finally, on May 9, 2016, we were able to celebrate our first edition at the Poble Espanyol, an idyllic place in Barcelona. We brought together more than 70 expert natural winemakers, including 40 from Catalonia and others from France and Italy, although it was not limited to wine alone; artisan cheese producers, extra virgin olive oil, sourdough breads, specialty coffees, sakes, and organic spirits also exhibited.

It was the first professional initiative in Spain aimed at the hospitality sector, distributors, exporters, and also end consumers. We invited the entire catering sector in Catalonia, and more than 700 people joined the event. Additionally, we organized a conference for sommelier students at ESHOB, where prominent pioneers of biodynamic viticulture, such as Nicolas Joly, shared their experience and knowledge.

Since that first edition, we have not stopped working tirelessly to independently and inclusively drive the natural wine movement in our country. We verify all our wineries through analysis of their wines and support both small producers and distributors and hospitality professionals who collaborate with them. We project the natural wine movement internationally from a professional standpoint, connecting exhibiting wineries with customers, distributors, and exporters, as well as with the hospitality industry, sommeliers, and enthusiasts.

We are an independent fair, which means we are not backed, influenced, or subject to the imposition of distributors, exporters, or associations. At our fair, we carefully select our exhibitors by verifying their wines through analysis; those that do not meet natural production criteria are excluded. However, over time and with experience, we have had to apply behavioral filters to many exhibitors.

Those who behave like authentic Rock Stars, with pretensions, and without humility because they have secured foreign distributors, cease to be invited. We have never needed “Famous Names” on our Line Up. In fact, when we started organizing fairs, many of those who now consider themselves famous were not even making wine or were just starting in the sector. We know that the reality is that this international fame often coincides with these wineries being completely unknown in their own city, region, or country of origin.

For us, it is fundamental that the people behind a winery are genuine, humble, and grateful. Those who do not demonstrate professional behavior at events by exceeding alcohol consumption, causing disturbances, or creating confusion are also excluded. Likewise, those who have behaved inappropriately with professional women in the sector or have discriminated against individuals based on their gender, sexual orientation, or other reasons, are rejected as exhibitors.

For us, good wine comes only from good people, and we refuse to promote wineries that exhibit inappropriate or contrary behavior to our values. Our fairs are plural and safe environments for all participants, and therefore, we reserve the right of admission.

We were pioneers in internationalizing participating wineries when no one talked about natural wine, providing visitors with authenticity and a professional tasting environment. We also brought in pioneering wineries producing natural wine from several European countries that have been making additive-free wine for over 30 or 40 years, with the aim of demystifying the belief that existed in our country between 2016 and 2019 that natural wine was a passing trend and demonstrating that it has always been and continues to be as old as the history of wine production.

Over the years, hundreds of wineries from our country and abroad attended our fair in search of promotion, international distributors, and exporters, and they succeeded. We have contributed to the growth and dynamism of the natural wine sector in our country, guided by rigorous criteria, involving prominent professionals in the fields of journalism, photography, graphic design, and audiovisual art to join us and help promote our exhibiting wineries.

Over the years, we witnessed the proliferation of numerous “natural wine events,” which were organized and grouped on dates coinciding with ours. In response to this situation, we chose to change the date of our fair every year. Our goal has always been to avoid our fair coinciding with other events, as this is counterproductive and detrimental to visitors, especially in the case of wine events, where clarity, sobriety, and professionalism are essential for a good tasting experience. Therefore, we ensure that our fairs are enjoyed peacefully, without visitors having to split between multiple events on the same day and travel across the entire city.

In 2018, we founded a GARAGE BAR, the first bar within a natural wine fair where thousands of verified wines showcased at the fair, regardless of their distributor, can be enjoyed. This initiative not only promotes the movement of natural wine but also provides visitors with access to the full diversity of natural wines from various regions of the world every day of the year, not solely on the fair’s day. GARAGE BAR serves as a pluralistic space where final consumers, sommeliers, distributors, and exporters convene, all united by their appreciation for fine wine.

We are not your typical fair, nor a gathering of wineries coming together to sell and showcase their wines to the public supported by their distributors. Currently, there are several events like these, which are attempts at replication, without guarantees or established criteria, of what we have been doing independently since 2016. It is worth noting that we have nothing against these events; it’s just a matter of principles and criteria that lead us to prioritize the need to differentiate ourselves from them.

For several years, Vella Terra has been dedicated to promoting all wineries that produce natural wine, providing clear and verified information to both end consumers and professionals who visit us. Our fair has become a benchmark and example worldwide thanks to our experience, trajectory, effectiveness, and seriousness in dealing with the natural wine sector, but also for our closeness and clarity in connecting with the public. Since our 8th edition in 2023, we decided to reduce the number of exhibitors to dedicate even more time to optimizing the visibility of all present wineries and always offer a better tasting experience.

We invite you to explore our history, written with facts than words.

Thank you for visiting us!
